Denim 4 Days: How to Find a Denim Style that Suits Your Body Type

Find your body shape and you can find the right pair of jeans for any occasion.

In the movie The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, four girls of different shapes and sizes share one pair of jeans and experience different life-changing events while wearing them. Although nice in theory, this doesn’t work well in real life. Yes, sometimes you can wear your friend's jeans and they fit, but it’s not likely they will fit well because they are not the best choice for your body shape.

No person is exactly the same. We are different shapes, sizes, and our styles are personal. There are, however, five basic body shapes and women’s jeans that look good on each of them. Once you figure out your shape, it’s time to shop.

Rectangle

A rectangular shaped woman looks like a fashion model. She is tall, her legs are long, and her hips have a little to no curve. If this is your body type, you may have found it hard to find jeans long enough while also feminine.

What you want to do is add more of a curve to your hips. Jeans that fit low on your hips or are high waisted can solve this problem. Avoid jeans that sit on your hips as they will only make them look boxy. Skinny jeans, skinny flares, rises, or a slimmer boyfriend jean will look amazing on this body type.

Examples of celebrities with a rectangle body shape are Katie Holmes, Cameron Diaz, and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Triangle

A triangle shaped body, or pear-shaped, has more curves in the hip and butt area and is smaller on top. This is actually a very common body type, so you are not alone.

The goal, because your waist is small compared to your hips, is to bring attention upwards. This will balance out the extra curve in the hips. The jeans you should try are bootcut or wider flares, higher rises, larger pockets, and stretch denim. If you want to wear heels, a long inseam will give the illusion of longer and slimmer legs. Skinny jeans are not out of the question, however, if you wear them, adding boots will balance out the look.

Examples of triangle shaped celebrities are Alicia Keys, Jennifer Lopez, and Claire Danes.

Hourglass

Hourglass body types are more proportionate and have less difficulty finding jeans that look great. The struggle is less about type and more about size. You need to find jeans that fit well in the waist, hip, and thigh. Skinny jeans, higher rises, and flares will fit your figure nicely. You should also choose a medium-sized pocket to keep things in proportion.

Round

A round body type carries more weight in the tummy area. They often find it difficult to find jeans that are flattering. Don’t give up, you just have to put in a little more work. Skinny jeans work when you add a flowy top to balance out the look. Choose rises, high if you are curvy and low if you are slimmer, to give more proportion to your style. A trouser jean is the best choice for overall balance.

Celebrities with a round body shape are Drew Barrymore, Catherine Zeta Jones, and Jennifer Hudson.
